Meet Rishima, an LIS Class of ’20 alumna and University of Leeds International Business BSc graduate, as well as an integral member of the GradTutor team! Today, she shares her inspiring journey and the valuable lessons she has learned along the way with our community. ✨
Q: What profession are you working towards? Why did you choose this goal?
A: I am working in Marketing, specifically digital marketing. The reason for this is, I was always intrigued by brands and I chose this path because of my passion for connecting them with their audience in meaningful, innovative ways. With the rise of digital platforms, I see incredible opportunities to leverage creativity and technology to drive impactful campaigns that not only increase visibility but foster genuine engagement.
Q: What advice would you give your high-school self?
A: Keep polishing the subjects you are weak in on a day to day basis, even if you’re just taking 20 minutes of your day for that.
Q: What subject did you struggle with the most? How did you master it?
A: I struggled with Physics during IGCSE and probably Maths during IB. Both these times, I went to my friends from the class who aced those subjects for help and for some reason I always registered that better compared to how I would in regular classes.
Q: What is your biggest achievement?
A: Probably moving to India and now starting my career in Marketing like I always dreamed. My ultimate goal is to build strategies that make brands not just memorable but indispensable to their customers.
Q: What habit or routine have you developed that has improved your productivity or well-being?
A: I think I have started putting myself more out there in terms of reaching out to brands I want to work with and also polishing skills which are important in my field of work.
Q: What motivates you to keep learning and growing?
A: I would say seeing growth, even if it is very small, seeing how far I have come since I started in terms of my work portfolio, keeps that drive alive.
Q: What skill did you learn after school that you wished you had learned earlier?
A: Probably that one shouldn’t be stuck on the big picture but should concentrate on small changes that can be implemented in life to work towards that goal.
Q: How has your IB grade helped you with your goals?
A: I think scoring well on IB has helped me get a position in a prestigious University like Uni of Leeds. I met like-minded people working towards similar goals which in the end also pushed me to go out there and achieve my own.
Q: How did you stay motivated when school felt overwhelming or difficult?
A: I continued revising with past papers throughout the year and turned to my peers who were in the years above me for advice.
Q: What’s a mistake you made as a student that taught you an important lesson?
A: Probably that it’s never too early to start revising and don’t keep anything last minute.
Q: How do you deal with stress in daily life?
A: I think I just believe that there is always a solution to everything and realised that nothing is the end of the world.
Q: What felt particularly difficult for you in high-school?
A: Honestly, ever since I moved to Germany from India, I realised that the entire concept of tutoring wasn’t as huge as it was in my hometown. I did struggle during my IGCSE’s to find the appropriate tutor to guide me through school as ours was the only school in the city who followed that curriculum.
Q: Can you share a moment from your time at school where you discovered a breakthrough?
A: I think it was when I was in my grade 12, I started giving tutoring in Business Management for my peers and that made it feel like it was a complete circle kind of moment.
